Andrew Edmunds

Whether you’re planning a Valentine’s Day extravaganza or trying to claw your way back into your loved one’s affections after a romantic interlude, Andrew Edmunds is a valuable asset to Cupid’s arsenal. This place is the culinary translation of a bunch of red roses and romance seems to ooze out the walls like the waft of Sex Panther. The intimate interior is dark wood, with dim lighting and is adorned with many candles (naturally). A hand written menu details the modern European mix of food, which changes on daily basis and is seasonally influenced. If you want to be on someone, bring them here.

The Portrait Bar – National Portrait Gallery

An understated gem for after work drinks. Situated at the top of the National Portrait Gallery and looking out over Trafalgar Square and down towards the Houses of Parliament, you will find few places in London that can match this view. As you might expect the bar itself is restrained and reasonable. Do take a brief look at exhibits if you have time; currently the Photographic Portrait Prize is the must see attraction.

Sat-Weds til 5pm; Thu-Fri til 8:30pm. St Martin’s Place, London WC2H 0HE. Tel: 020 7306 0055, website:www.npg.org.uk

Club Bar & Dining

This is one of those dependable modern brasserie types that it helps to have up your sleeve for low key work events and no nonsense birthday dinners. An open kitchen situated just behind the bar gives off that chef’s table feel, complementing the tasteful brick/wood/leather décor and adding to the bustling atmosphere. Downstairs there’s a bar lit up in neon and sporting some rather fine purple wallpaper for a bit of fun, which on Tuesdays hosts live music acts (recently including the Argonauts and Dubstar). Rumoured to be a celeb haunt, fortunately the prices don’t show it.

Price: £40-50pp. 21-22 Warwick Street, Piccadilly Circus, W1B 5NE. Tel: 020 7734 1002. Web:www.theclubbaranddining.co.uk
