This restaurant in the Design Museum overlooks the Thames from Tower Bridge to Canary Wharf. Clearly the view is the star of the show here, whilst the restaurant itself is set in a glass box whose interior aesthetics frame it all beautifully. The food is considerably better than your average museum café papier maché, but admittedly you might not make the trip for it alone. The variety of modern European dishes is good if not superlative. Perfect if you are playing host to visitors from out of town, but would also make for an interesting alternative for Sunday lunch.

Mon – Sat 12-3 & 6-11; Sun 12-4. Price approx £40pp. 28 Shad Thames, nr Tower Bridge, SE1 2YD. Phone: 020 7378 7031

Set in the foodie mecca of Borough Market, Roast delivers against its “deliciously British” mission. Views over the market and St Paul’s leave plenty for the eyes to feast on through huge windows, which give the place a bright and modern feel. The food itself is solid British fair using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers, and it is here that the restaurant has its strong suit, rather than in value dining (as with the rest of Borough market). Heavy on meat as the name suggests, we recommend the lamb and Welsh beef.

Price: approx £60pp. The Floral Hall, Stoney Street, London SE1 1TL. Tel: 020 7940 1300. Website: www.roast-restaurant.com

Mix Borough Market and Spanish food, and unsurprisingly the result is some damn tasty tapas. Being the retail outlet of a specialist Iberian food wholesaler, it’s not surprising that you’re getting a cultural experience as authentic as Catholics with thumb screws here. There’s no booking, so be prepared to wait it out, but the staff will generally do their best to squeeze you in somewhere and you can then get started with a bottle of wine, a couple of dishes and you can go from there.
