Holborn

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

This Olde Worlde pub was a favourite of Dickens and Johnson. Now, if you can track it down to its alley off Fleet Street, you will find a vaulted warren of bars, restaurants and conspiratory cubby holes alternately decked with rich dark wood panelling and stone. Whilst aspiring barristers and local bankers will be all too familiar with its location, for others the trick is to keep a keen eye out for the sign hanging on the north side of the road, half way between the law courts and Clerkenwell Rd. The food is traditional pub fair, and depending on which of the 3 restaurants you are in varies from no nonsense bites to fill you up to surprisingly fine dining. Come here on a dark winter’s night to quaff a few ales, or impress visiting relatives (especially Americans) with you intimate knowledge of the backstreets of London.

Beaujolais

Another place that is small on space and big on character is Beaujolais, a quirky Gallic bar in Covent Garden. Wait around long enough and you’ll be able to squeeze into a seat and enjoy a bottle or two of the place’s namesake. The place is smothered in Ricard posters and French enough to make you want to chain smoke Gauloises, but they’re actually very friendly here. It’s the perfect place to forget your sorrows in a c’est la vie manner or charm a prospective petite amie. A short selection of authentic bites is also available.

The Bierodrome

Belgium is not renown for many things, and dubiously bureaucrats and rain feature somewhere near the top of the of the word association list. Thankfully, it’s not all bad, and beer is also up there. Showcase of Belgian culture, the Bierodrome has many, many beers on tap, and beyond that it has a vast array of bottled varieties, which together make “quaff” word of the day; thankfully bureaucrats are somewhat lacking. Add in a jovial air and good service, and frankly, who needs more? There is food, but along with the décor, it’s a bit Belgian…

Joe Allen

An old school American restaurant that leaves you feeling like you’re dining in a Chicago basement. In a good way, you know… classic film posters cover plain brick walls, whilst simple wood chairs surround tables covered with white cloths. Wise punters may ask for the off menu burger – small but tasty. Others will appreciate decent cocktails and house wine served by the carafe. Open late, this is a great post theatre venue or somewhere to wile away a few hours listening to jazz standards played by the ancient pianist with a lazy eye and a perma tan. They’ve started doing breakfasts as well, but god knows who would come.
