Mayfair
Absolut Ice Bar

This walk-in freezer in Mayfair offers you 20 flavours of vodka and an amazing range of cocktails. Whilst the seats, bar and even glasses are constructed from ice, a thermal poncho and gloves keep you warm while you enjoy yourself. Try to resist licking the ice walls to see if your tongue sticks. 40 minute time slots should be pre booked (and will be plenty long enough), but if you’re still thirsty head to Mews of Mayfair round the corner in Lancashire Court.

If you’re looking for effortless appeal you could do a lot worse than this ice cool player of a venue. Whilst now ubiquitous pan Asian food may be the intended focus here, its truly stunning interior and fabulous cocktails are what make this place stand out from the crowd. Follow the stairs down from the unassuming threshold and you’ll suddenly find yourself emerging into a modern Eastern labyrinth where marble fittings and dimmed spotlights frame the imposing bar. It may be expensive, but you’ll feel like a million dollars.

Walkers of St James

Situated on the prestigious Duke Street, a stones throw from the infamous Fortnum and Mason, this ‘pub’ is all about keeping up appearances. Its name conjures up images of an ostentatious West End bar but country cottage is actually more the ticket with paintings of rural England adorning the walls, a low rise wooden beamed ceiling and crimson walls barely illuminated by candles. It’s the kind of place you could head to for a few drinks after work and never want to leave again thanks to the comfortable and cosy atmosphere and TV screens projecting images of roaring fires. Towards the end of the night when the effects of the real ale start to kick in, the big leather armchairs look more and more appealing and you might find yourself believing you’re already back at home… In essence it’s a pub trading on a posh name, but in times of the credit crunch it’s all about embellishment.
